At the top of the hill, in the San Augustin Pass above White Sands. (Well, more than a hill, really – it’s a two-mile climb to a point about 5,700 feet up.) After leaving here, for the next 35 miles of a very lonely road, there’s no GPS and no outgoing cell service. One suspects the military doesn’t want anybody knowing where they are or making phone calls. I hope we don’t get brain cancer from all the jamming signals…
